Janmashtami in districts

The Hindu community celebrated Janmashtami elaborately yesterday to mark the birth of Lord Krishna.
The mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Sayeed Khokon, inaugurated a Janmashtami rally, jointly organised by the Mahanagar Sarbajanin Puja Committee and the Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad, by lighting a ‘mangal pradip’ (auspicious lamp) in the presence of the general secretary of the ruling Awami League, Syed Ashraful Islam, who was the chief guest.
“The incumbent government is committed to ensuring the rights of people of all castes, creeds and communities,” said Syed Ashraf.
The rally started from Polashir Mor. It was attended by several thousand devotees. They marched through the streets of Polashir Bazar, National Press Club, Jagannath Hall, Kendrio Shaheed Minar, Roy Shaheb Bazar and Bahadur Shah Park.
Colourful Janmashtami processions displaying the life of Lord Krishna were brought out in the capital and elsewhere in the country to mark the occasion. Hindu people also fasted, offered prayers, recited the Bhagwad Geeta, held discussion meetings and cultural functions, and distributed ‘maha prasad’ to observe the day.
President Abdul Hamid, too, hosted a reception at Bangabhaban on the occasion of Janmashtami. On the occasion, the President urged the people of all religions to further strengthen their existing fraternal and friendly bonding, and apply it to achieve national advancement and prosperity.
“The ideal of Sri Krishna was to build real love and harmony among the people, removing clashes from the society. Throughout his life, Sri Krishna searched for the path of emancipation and humanity,” the President said.
