A faction of Pro-Awami League teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday besieged the administrative buildings on the campus to protest the ‘humiliation’ of some teachers by incumbent VC-backed teachers on Tuesday morning. The protesters under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Bishwashi Pragatishil Shikkhak Shamaj’ about at 8.30am blocked the administrative building holding black badge and continued the programme till 12pm.

Later, they formed a human chain in front of JU administrative building with the participation of over 80 teachers of different departments and institutes. Speakers at the programme demanded exemplary punishment of those for ‘assaulting’ the teachers who were protesting the ‘irregularities’ of current Vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam in recent days.

They also denounced JU VC alleging that she is continuously violating university acts, statutes by appointing provosts in 7 dormitories and dean in two faculties.

Meanwhile, JU VC Prof Farzana Islam called teachers’ and officials’ communities for exchanging views and solution of the existing unrest situation on the campus at the seminar room of Zahir Raihan auditorium at 10am. Addressing the function, JU VC urged the teachers to avoid any unwanted activities on the campus that may hamper the academic activities. Over 150 teachers and officials of the university were present at the function while anti-VC teachers boycotted it.

Meanwhile, protesting teachers yesterday announced weeklong programme demanding punishment of teachers who were involved in ‘assaulting’, removal of proctor for his irresponsibility during the incident and protesting the irregularities of current VC. Spokesperson of the teachers’ group Associate Professor Farid Ahmed made the disclosure of the weeklong programmes at a press conference held at the teachers’ lounge of Old Art academic building yesterday at 4.30 pm.

“Our weeklong programmes includes collecting public opinion and exchanging views with different communities of the university from April 19 to 23, showing black flag in front of VC office on April 24 and sit-in programme at VC office on April 25”, he said. “We will announce next programme through a press conference on April 26”, he added.
