�People with disabilities can contribute to society�

Stressing the importance of protecting the rights of physically-challenged people, Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu yesterday said everyone, including those with disabilities, has the potential to contribute to society. “The every member of society has the ability to do something for it.  The sate and society that ignores the rights of the handicapped and remains reluctant about them are depriving them of making their contributions,” he said, reports UNB.
Inu came up with the remarks at the inaugural ceremony of ‘Promoting Persons with Disabilities through Participation in Media’ at Dhaka Reporters Unity. Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) and Sightsavers jointly organised the programme.
Chaired by Dr SakhawatAli Khan, the programme was addressed, among others, by National Human Rights Commission Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman, ICS Executive Director Shameem Ara Sheuli, Sightsavers Country Director Khondoker Ariful Islam and European Union, Bangladesh head of cooperation delegation Mario Ronconi.
Senior journalists and handicapped journalists working in various print, electronic and online media and other organisations took part in the programme.
The minister said, “We must believe no one is complete; everyone has limitations, and all the members of society will have to work together to overcome the limitations.”
He said the country’s people must have to change their mindset towards women which enable Bangladesh to achieve its desired development through educating women and handicapped population.
Inu also said work on setting up a separate directorate for people with disabilities is underway, and stressed installing a separate monitoring cell to oversee the implementation of the acts which are amended aiming to establish the rights of country’s physically-challenged people.
NHRC Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman said it is the state’s duty to ensure the rights of people with disabilities and it would be unfair if the state fails to perform its duty.
He also said, “We’ll have to come out of our typical mindsets about disabilities as it is a curse because the disable have the enormous ability.”
Dr Mizanur also stressed increasing budget allocation for social safety net and welfare sector.
