Public varsity teachers to abstain from work Sep 8

Teachers of 37 public universities, who have organised sustained agitations at different points of time demanding separate pay scales, yesterday announced that they would abstain from work on September 8.? They have even decided not to hold any exam scheduled on that day.
They said they have been staging demonstrations with a view to realising the rights of teachers for three months to draw the attention of the policymakers without hampering academic activities. However, they have got no response or assurance from any quarter. Therefore, the teachers are left with no other alternative but to take stern action to realise their demands, they said.
This announcement came at a press conference by the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (FBUTA), held at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical Hospital in the capital.
The teachers will also hold a rally on September 8. On September 10, they will hold a view-exchange meeting with  editors of the print and electronic media, and on September 13, a rally at 11:00am at the foot of Oparajeo Bangla and work abstention. They will hand over a memorandum containing signatures of the teachers to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Prof. Farid Uddin, president of the FBUTA, said: “We have been staging agitations like forming human chains and organising sit-ins and three-hour work abstention since May 14 to tell the government that the proposed eighth pay scale is against the interest of the public university teachers.
