Pro-AL teachers’ faction calls strike at JU today

A faction of pro-Awami League (AL) teachers of Jahangirnagar University will observe a daylong strike on the campus today protesting what they said the violation of university act and statute by the Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam. Under the banner ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Bishwashi Pragatishil Shikkhak Shamaj’, they will hold the strike from 8.30am to 4 pm. Leader of this teacher’s group and also JU Pro-VC Prof Md Amir Hussain told The Independent yesterday.

As a part of the strike, the teachers will remain off from all academic and administrative activities. The platform will announce its next programme at a press conference around 4 pm today, he added.

He said the Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam released nine provosts from their respective dormitories on April 11 with her special order and appointed new provosts which is illegal and violation of acts.

The teachers’ group through a press release yesterday denounced JU VC alleging that she appointed provosts by violating university acts and statutes. According to the university act, the provost of a hall shall be appointed by the syndicate and shall hold office for such periods. But JU VC appointed new provosts without syndicate’s decision’, the release said.

They also alleged that JU VC made some persons as provosts who had involvement with ‘Shibir’, Jamaat’s student wing, and have moral degradation.  However, JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam denied all the allegations and said Vice-Chancellor can able to appoint any person in any post temporarily with her special order. It is not violation of act. “The teachers who have called strike tomorrow, they are not in the right way”, she added.
