Khaleque wants to build a clean and smart city

The mayoral candidate for the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) elections nominated by the ruling Awami League (AL), Talukder Mohammad Abdul Khaleque, has promised to make Khulna city a modern one by providing all modern amenities to its residents, if elected. Elections to Gazipur and Khulna City Corporations will be held on May 15. According to the election schedule, the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 23.

The lives of Khulna city’s residents are plagued by various problems. What will a mayoral hopeful do to solve those problems, if elected? How will all the modern amenities be ensured? What is his vision for the future of the city?

Looking for these answers, The Independent correspondent talked to the mayoral hopeful nominated by the ruling party, Talukder Abdul Khaleque. Here is the full interview.

Talukder Khaleque, the former lawmaker from Bagerhat-3 constituency, said his dream is to make Khulna city a clean, active and smart one by ensuring all modern amenities.

“As a local leader of the Awami League, I will get support from the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. And if elected, I will build up the Khulna city into a modern one by implementing different government projects here,” he said.

The AL-nominated candidate said he wants to help the current government materialise its vision to make Bangladesh a middle-income state by 2021 and a developed one by 2041 by developing the Khulna city.

“With the help of all, I want to make Khulna city a liveable one by identifying its problems. My dream is to make the city humane for both the rich and poor where self-respect for the citizens will be a top priority. The rights of the city’s residents will be protected,” he said.

Replying to a question, the mayoral hopeful said, “Proper planning as well as astute leadership are needed to rebuild Khulna city. I hope we can do so under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”

“There are multiple problems that plague our city. The absence of substantial and

efficient transportation, traffic snarls, food contamination, poor access to health services, water-logging, mosquito menace and waste management weigh heavily on my list,” he added.
“If elected, I will concentrate on waste management and water-logging, and introduce special transportation,” he added. In the last city corporation elections, Talukder Abdul Khaleq was defeated by BNP candidate Moniruzzaman Moni.
As the elections will be held under the party banner for the first time in two city corporations polls, the main electoral battle will be held between the ‘Boat’ and the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’, the symbols of the AL and the BNP respectively.
The election campaigns are yet to acquire momentum since the aspirants have not received their electoral symbols yet. The candidates will get their symbols on April 24.
Insiders said the AL and the BNP are both taking the upcoming local body elections as a challenge ahead of the next national elections as both the parties think the results of the two city polls would have a strong impact on the next polls, scheduled to be held at the end of this year.
