Shipping dept chief engineer suspended for taking bribe
The government has suspended the arrested acting chief engineer of the Department of Shipping (DoS), SM Najmul Haq, from service temporarily. The suspension will be effective from the date of his arrest on April 12. The shipping ministry yesterday issued a circular to this effect.Earlier, on Wednesday, a team of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested Najmul Haq for accepting a bribe of Tk. 5 lakh at a city restaurant. Shipping secretary Md Abdus Samad signed the suspension order of Najmul.
This is really unfortunate. The whole thing has tarnished the departments image and set a bad example. The ACC has filed a case against Najmul Haq and the case will follow its own legal course, DoS director general Commodore Syed Ariful Islam told The Independent.
Terming the incident as disaster, Syed Ariful Islam said: Were thinking of launching a disaster management programme on how to make the department corruption-free. We need assistance from the media too.
An ACC team, led by Nasim Anwar, caught Najmul Haq red-handed while he was accepting the bribe at Segun restaurant in Segunbagicha in the city on Wednesday. The ACC, then, filed a case against him with Shahbagh police station.
