Eight nomination papers of the mayoral candidates in Gazipur and five nomination papers in Khulna for the upcoming city corporation elections were declared valid by the Election Commission yesterday. In Gazipur, one nomination paper was postponed and another nomination was cancelled by the returning officer.
The first day of the scrutiny of the nomination papers was held yesterday at the returning officer’s office at the Bangataz auditorium in Gazipur town. The returning officer for the GCC election, Rezaul Islam, said: “Ten candidates submitted their nomination papers for the mayoral election. Eight nomination papers have been declared valid after the scrutiny."
The candidates whose nominations have been declared valid are Awami League candidate Jahangir Alam, BNP candidate Alhaj Hasan Uddin Sarker, Jatiya Somajtantrick Dal (JASOD) candidate Rashedul Hasan Rana, Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Nasir Uddin, Bangladesh Islami Front candidate Jalal Uddin, Communist Party of Bangladesh candidate Kazi Ruhul Amin, independent candidate Mohammed Sanaullah and another Independent candidate Farid Ahmed.
However, the nomination paper of Islami Oikka Jot candidate Fazlur Rahman was postponed and the nomination paper of an independent candidate, Afsar Uddin, was cancelled by the returning officer. On the other hand, the scrutiny for the councillors' nomination papers is yet to be finalised. It will be declared on Monday.
As many as 10 mayoral candidates, 294 general councillor candidates for 57 seats and 87 women councillor candidates for 19 reserved seats submitted their nomination papers on the last day of submitting nomination papers on Thursday.
UNB adds: The Election Commission (EC) yesterday accepted nomination papers of all five candidates for the mayoral post of Khulna City Corporation polls scheduled for May 15. The candidates are--Talukder Abdul Khaleque of Awami League, Nazrul Islam Manju of BNP, Shafiqul Islam of Jatiya Party, Mawlana Mozammel of Islami Andolan and Mizanur Rahman of Communist Party Bangladesh (CPB).
Earlier on April 12, the candidates submitted nomination papers. Elections to Gazipur and Khulna city corporations will be held on May 15.
