BNP candidate wants to make Khulna a clean and green city

RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP’s) mayoral candidate for Khulna City Corporation (KCC), Nazrul Islam Monju, wants to make Khulna a clean and green city. “We will certainly announce our election manifesto. We will prepare our election manifesto soon, wherein we will emphasise the need to make Khulna a green and clean city,” he said in an exclusive interview. Talking to The Independent, Nazrul Islam, also an organising secretary of the party, said they would prepare the election manifesto for the upcoming city corporation polls scheduled for May 15. He said a meeting of the Khulna city BNP will be held today and they would take a decision about the election preparations and the preparation of the manifesto.

“Our preparations are going on. We are now preparing the lists of polling agents along with the preparatory committee and centre-wise sub-committees,” he said.

Nazrul Islam, also the president of the Khulna city BNP, said the printing of posters and leaflets for the candidates have already started and they would start their election campaign on time.

Replying to a question, he said the people are in doubt whether they would be able to go to the polling centres and cast their votes without any interruptions. “The people are in fear and harbour doubts whether the voting and election results would be completed in a proper and transparent manner,” he said.

Nazrul Islam, who has been picked as the party’s mayoral candidate instead of the incumbent BNP mayor

Moniruzzaman Moni, expressed his optimism that he would win the mayoral elections. “Inshallah, I am hundred per cent hopeful about my victory since BNP has never been defeated in Khulna city,” he said.

He claimed that there is no factionalism within the party here and all, including the incumbent mayor, were working together in favour of him as a party mayoral candidate.

Monju, also a former lawmaker, said he is now joining preparatory meetings at the ward level and issuing them the necessary directives.

Asked what he did on Friday, the BNP leader said he joined a number of social programmes, including namaz-e-janaja and doa mahfil, and met important people in different areas.

He added that they would go from door to door when the election campaign formally starts.

Nazrul Islam, who did not want to fight for the mayoral post, said he accepted the nomination in accordance with the party’s decision. He submitted his nomination paper before the returning officer on Thursday.

Earlier, the BNP decided to take part in May 15 elections to Khulna and Gazipur City Corporations polls.

The party has also nominated another new mayoral candidate, Hasan Uddin Sarker, to contest the Gazipur city polls as a mayoral candidate.
