UP chairman held over rape in Feni

Police arrested a union parishad (UP) chairman for allegedly violating a housewife in Fulgazi Upazila in Feni district early yesterday. The arrested was identified as Nurul Islam, chairman of Fulgazi sadar union parishad also joint general secretary of upazila unit Awami League. Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Fulgazi Police Station, said the victim of Boroia Bijoypur village in the upazila along with her nephew went to the union parishad for settling a family dispute on Wednesday afternoon.
The chairman later violated the housewife tactfully, police said quoting the victim. Hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot and took her to Fulgazi Upazila Health Complex. She was later shifted to Feni Sadar hospital as her condition deteriorated.
Hazera Khatun, mother-in-law of the victim, filed a case with Fulgazi Police Station in the night. Agitated people cordon the area but the chairman managed to flee the spot. The OC Humayun Kabir said police in a dive arrested the UP chairman and they will take necessary steps after getting the medical test report
