Sultana finishes 4th in shooting

Ummey Zakia Sultana did the best result among the Bangladeshi shooters on the fifth day of the 21st Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Brisbane yesterday. She claimed the fourth position in the women's 10 meter air rifle shooting.

Zakia Sultana, who participated for the first time in the Commonwealth shooting following the SA Games last year, scored 202.0 in the ongoing Games final.

Zakia scored 410.5 to claim sixth position in the qualifying phase on her way to final and after hard fought with the contenders of India, Australian shooters could clinch the fourth position but she was ahead of the bronze medal winners till the 10th shots.  

Zakia before this, played in the World Cup competition in Delhi and Japan but could not do any outstanding performance and in the very first time in the Commonwealth Games she competed very closely with the medal winners.

In the women’s same competition -10 meter Air Rifle,  Syeda Atkia Hassan was 10th out of 18 participants in the 10 meter air rifle.

In men’ 10 meter air pistol, Shakil Ahmed could move into the final round after scoring 563 in the qualifying phase but finished on sixth with scoring 150.1 in the final round while in the same event Anwar Hossain was eliminated from the first round and was 13th among 24 shooters with scoring  555 points.

However, Zakia, was satisfied with her performance, as well as her coach also, as she said, “I am happy with the result with becoming fourth, as it is my first time in this game and could qualify in the final to fight for the medal with the world’s best shooters.”

“Till the last moment I thought that I could but at that time shots were not perfect but were very poor, as I lost the medal, at least failed to win the bronze medal.”

“Coach told me to enjoy, not take pressure or not to be disappointed. I think to be fourth at the first time participation, I am success.”

“I think, to qualify in the last eight in the Commonwealth Games means, we are not far behind of the world class shooters. It will boost up me to do better in the next time and I will try to make it success. After competition in this Games, I could cope with this level of competition.”

Coach Klavs Christensen said, “We know it is tough competition for her and very big tournament and to enter into the last four is a big achievement.”

“First you need technically sound, talent, then have to practice, mentally, physically – everything would come together and finally it is a mental Game,” said the Danish coach, Christensen.
