3 bus staff among 5 arrested

Five people were arrested for the alleged gang-rape of a garment worker inside a running bus on the Dhaka-Aricha highway at Dhamrai in Manikganj on Sunday night. The accused included three staffers of the bus. The officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhamrai police station identified the accused as Abdul Aziz, 25, Mokbul Hossen, 40, Babu Mollik, 24, Boloram, 20, and Shohel Rana, 20. He said all five were transport workers. He further said the victim was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment. Recounting the incident, the OC said the victim had boarded a local bus of Jatriseba transport services after coming out of her RMG factory on Sunday night. All except the five accused got down from the bus when it reached Kalampur bus stand, the OC said, quoting the victim.

The bus helper then closed the door and the driver started to drive aimlessly. The five men then took turns in raping the woman inside the bus. The woman’s screams alerted some petrol pump workers who called Dhamrai police station. Four police teams immediately chased the bus, rescued the woman and detained the five accused. Police have filed a rape case against the five detainees and sought their remand from a court.

Last year, college student Jakia Sultana Rupa, 27, was gang-raped and murdered on August 25 on a moving bus travelling from Sirajganj to Mymensingh. Five people were arrested two days later. Of them, four transport workers were awarded death penalty in a case filed for the rape and killing of Rupa. The other accused, who was also a staff of the bus, was sentenced to seven years.
In a similar incident three months earlier in the same year, a garment worker was allegedly gang-raped by four men including her boy friend in Hemayetpur area of Savar on May 16.
