Gazipur, Khulna mayoral polls

BNP picks Hasan Sarker, Manzu

STAFF REPORER

The BNP has nominated Hasan Uddin Sarker and Nazrul Islam Manzu as the party’s mayoral candidates to contest the elections to the Gazipur and Khulna City Corporations respectively.BNP secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the party nominees at a press conference at chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office a day after the ruling Awami League (AL) picked its candidates for the two city polls, scheduled to be held on May 15.

The announcement was made following a closed-door meeting of party senior leaders, including standing committee members.

Earlier, on Sunday, the BNP nomination board interviewed the six party aspirants for the mayoral post of Gazipur city and three for Khulna city.

Again, the AL picked grassroots leaders—Jahangir Alam Sarker and Talukder Abdul Khalek—as its mayoral candidates for the elections to the upcoming Gazipur and Khulna City Corporations respectively.

Earlier, the BNP policymaking body decided, in principle, to take part in the local government elections as part of its movement to secure the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia and to ensure the next general polls are held under a non-partisan government.

A total of seven aspirants collected and submitted nomination forms seeking mayoral nomination from the BNP to vie for the Gazipur city polls. Among them, six aspirants appeared before the interview board. For Khulna, three aspirants collected and submitted nomination forms and faced the interview board.

In the last elections of 2013, AL leader Ajmatullah Khan was defeated by BNP-backed candidate MA Mannan in Gazipur. In Khulna, AL-backed candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque was defeated by Moniruzzaman Moni.

According to the election schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is April 12, while the dates for scrutinising these are April 15 and 16, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 23.
