Woman stabbed dead in Ctg
A woman was killed while her mother and brother injured in an altercation between neighbours over a stolen mobile phone memory card at Madarbari in Chittagong on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Bali Begum, 25, wife of Nur Nabi of the area.
Md Alauddin, sub-inspector of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) police outpost, confirmed it saying that two families locked into an altercation over a stolen mobile phone memory card.
At one stage, Joy, a member of the neighbouring family, stabbed Bali Begum with a knife. The victim's mother Baby Akhter, 50 and brother Md Sumon, 28, sustain injuries when they tried to save her, police said. Later, they were taken to the CMCH where the duty doctor declared Bali Begum dead and admitted the injured there, the SI added.
Gas pipeline leakage burns 3
Three members of a family sustained burn injuries as a fire erupted due to a gas line leakage in Bhadail area of Ashulia here on early Sunday.
The injured were identified as Alamgir, 40, his wife Afroza Khatun, 30, and their son Alamin, 12, hailing from Sherpur upazila in Bogra district.
Alamgir, a supervisor of Actor Garments and his wife Afroza, operator of Ria Garments, used to live in the rented ground floor flat of a three-storey building in the area.
The fire broke out when Afroza went to the kitchen for putting fire on the stove around 5am, said Abdul Awal, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station. Later, fire engulfed the entire flat leaving the trio injured, he added.
Afroza received 70 per cent burn injury while their son Alamin received 60 per cent, said Dr Rezaul Haque, head of the Intensive Care Unit of Enam Medical College Hospital.
Workshop on UGC Digital Library held
A day-long workshop on ‘UGC Digital Library User Training’ was held at UGC auditorium yesterday, says a press release.
University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh in association with Wiley, an online based publisher organised the professional training programme for the librarians of public and private universities and some national level organisations.
Professor Abdul Mannna, Chairman, UGC, graced the programme as the chief guest. With Professor Dr Md Akhtar Hossain, member, UGC, in the chair, Dr Md Khaled, Secretary, UGC delivered the address of welcome. Md Abdullah Al Hasan Chowdhury, Additional Secretary (University), Ministry of Education and Dr Gauranga Chandra Mahanta ndc, Project Director (Additional Secretary), Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project, were the special guests on the occasion. Professor Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Professor Dr Dil Afroza Begum, Members, UGC and Divisional Heads, UGC, among others, were present.
At present, 90 organisations including 86 universities of the country are subscribing over 35,000 high-quality scholarly e-resources through UGC digital library. A total of 14 e-publishers including Wiley are providing e-resources to the subscribers.
4th death anniversary of ABM Musa today
The fourth death anniversary of eminent journalist ABM Musa will be observed today, reports BSS.
On the occasion, a doa mahfil will be held at his native Kutubpur village in Fulgazi upazila of Feni district.
Besides, a doa mahfil will also be held at his 5/2 Iqbal road residence in capital’s Mohammadpur on April 13, said a press release today. All relatives and admirers of ABM Musa have been requested to join the doa mahfil.
AMB Musa died of old-age complications at Lab Aid Hospital here on April 9, 2014. ABM Musa was born at his maternal uncle's house at Dharmapur village under Fulgazi thana of Feni on February 28 in 1931.
Principal Officer of Mercantile Bank passes away
Sazzad Bin Haque, Principal Officer of Mercantile Bank Ltd, Banani Branch, died of cardiac arrest passed away at a hospital in the capital on Saturday, says a press release.
His namaz-e-janaza was held after Asr prayer at Ibrahimpur Moddhopara Jame Mosque. Later, he was buried Azimpur graveyardat on Saturday. The board of directors, executives and officers of Mercantile Bank Limited expressed deep condolences and sympathies to bereaved family members of late Sazzad Bin Haque.
