Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) is going to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Engineering Division of Bangladesh Army to implement ‘Canal re-excavation, extension, renovation and development to solve water logging in Chittagong city’ involving Tk 5,616 crore.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken a step to free the port city from the curse of waterlogging with the approval of the project in a ECNEC meeting held on August 9 last year.
CDA Executive Engineer and Project Director Ahmed Mainuddin said after signing the MOU, the army will go for the works. He said initially, excavation, extension and renovation will be carried out in 16 canals among the total of 36.
In the meantime government has disbursed Tk150 crore for the project.
CDA Chairman Abdus Salam sought all-out cooperation from all, including Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA), Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) and Water Development Board to implement the project to ameliorate the perennial problem of waterlogging in the port city.
The project entities include re-excavation of 36 canals within the city areas, construction of 12 sluice gates and pump house on the estuary of six canals, construction of six culverts, procurement of necessary equipment, cleaning of 320 km long existing drains, construction of retaining wall of 178 kilometres, construction of 48 girder bridges, re-excavation of all existing drains in 302 kilometre areas and installation of 880 electric poles.
