City polls mayoral nomination

AL picks Jahangir, Khalek for Gazipur, Khulna

BNP to announce decisions today
STAFF REPORTER

The ruling Awami League (AL) has picked grassroots leaders -- Jahangir Alam Sarker and Talukder Abdul Khalek --  as its mayoral candidates for the upcoming Gazipur and Khulna City Corporations elections, respectively. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) interviewed the mayoral nomination seekers yesterday and the decision on the party’s nomination will be announced today, said party sources.

Awami league Local Government Nomination Board endorsed the duo in a meeting held at the party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's official residence Ganabhaban in the capital yesterday. Prime Minister and AL President Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting.

After holding a meeting with the local leaders of the two districts, the party president announced the names of Gazipur district AL General Secretary Jahangir Alam Sarker and Bagerhat-3 constituency lawmaker Talukder Abdul Khalek as Awami League’s mayoral candidates for the ensuing city polls, meeting sources said.

Earlier, a total of seventeen mayoral aspirants collected Awami League nomination forms for contesting the two city corporation polls scheduled to be held on May 15.

Of them seven aspirants collected party nomination forms for Khulna while ten for Gazipur.

In 2013, Awami League leader Ajmatullah Khan was defeated by Bangladesh Nationalist Party backed candidate MA Mannan in Gazipur. In Khulna, AL-backed candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque was defeated by Moniruzzaman Moni.

In the BNP camp, a total of 10 aspirants sought

nomination for two mayoral posts in Gazipur and

Khulna city polls. Of them, seven are seeking nomination for the mayoral post for Gazipur city and three for

Khulna.

The mayoral aspirants and their followers converged at the venues of the interviews from the evening.

The BNP interview board, led by party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, started interviewing nomination seekers for Khulna city polls at 5:30pm, at party chief Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office.

BNP sources said the interview board heard different aspects of the nomination seekers. Of the three aspirants for Khulna, either outgoing mayor Moniruzzaman Moni or party organising secretary Nazrul Islam Manju would likely get the party's nomination, the sources added.

The interviews of the BNP's prospective candidates for Gazipur city polls were held later in the day.

The names of Hasan Uddin Sarker and outgoing mayor MA Mannan were widely discussed inside the party and one of them is likely to be nominated the BNP candidate for Gazipur, said sources.

According to the election schedule, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is April 12, while the dates for scrutinising those are April 15 and 16, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 23.
