10 want BNP nomination

The 20-party alliance will extend support to the candidate whoever gets BNP ticket to vie for mayoral posts in the Khulna and Gazipur city polls billed for May 15, reports UNB. The top alliance leaders took the decision at a meeting yesterday night at BNP chairperson's Gulshan office.

"Our meeting has decided that only BNP will field candidates in the Khulna and Gazipur city polls, while the 20-party alliance partners will support them," a top alliance leader wishing anonymity told UNB after the meeting. He said Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami representative Abdul Halim who was present at the meeting said he will convey their party about the alliance's decision as it has already announced to field candidates in the two city polls.

Apart from the city polls issue, the 20-party leader said, they discussed the country's latest political situation and assessed the current movement to have Khaleda freed from jail.

Ten aspirants have collected and submitted nomination papers to contest on the BNP's ticket in the ensuing Gazipur and Khulna city corporation elections, scheduled to be held on May 15.  Seven of them, including the outgoing mayor of Gazipur City Corporation MA Mannan and his son M Monjurul Karim Rony, are seeking the party ticket as mayoral candidate. The others are executive committee member Hasan Uddin Sarker, Salahuddin Sarker, Shawkat Hossain Sarker, Abdus Salam and Sharafat Hossain. Three aspirants are outgoing mayor of Khulna City Corporation Moniruzzaman Moni, organising secretary Nazrul Islam Manju, and Advocate Shafiqul Alam Mona.

All the aspirants submitted nomination papers, along with Tk. 25,000 (non-refundable), at party's central office at Naya Paltan in the city yesterday (Friday), said BNP assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu. On Thursday, aspirants collected party nomination forms for Tk. 10,000 each.

The party will finalise the party candidate by interviewing the prospective candidates at the chairperson’s Gulshan office on April 8. According to the election schedule, polling in the two city corporations will be held on May 15, while the last date to file nomination papers before the respective returning officer is April 12.
