Universal Theatre will stage the 40th show of its much acclaimed production ‘Mahatma’ today at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Segun Bagicha in the capital.
The drama, written by Mazharul Haque Pintu, will focus on the communal riot which had begun in Noakhali in 1946. To destroy the communal harmony of the Indian Subcontinent, the British conspired to “divide and rule”, to be specific to wage a conflict between Hindu and Muslim. In that riot, opportunists and religious extremists burned village after village, and massive loot, killing, kidnapping and persecution of women took place.
The event forced hundreds of Hindu families to move to India for safety. After getting information of riot in Noakhali, Mahatma rushed to the place due to his physical illness and tried his best to play a pivotal role in cooling down the situation. He toured the genocide-stricken area, and played a lead role in calming the communal tension.
Azad Abul Kalam will play the role of Gandhi in the play. The other casts of the play were Swakat Ali Mansur, Mazharul Haque Pintu, Mahfuzur Rahman Polash, Mohammad Kashem and Mirazul Islam.
