Asian and Pacific Energy Forum meeting in Bangkok heard a ringing call for enhanced energy security and taking energy responsibility for developing countries by the developed nations, says a press release on Wednesday. Energy ministers from more than 20 countries from the Asia and the Pacific region met in Bangkok to commit effective implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 7 for enhanced energy security and sustainable energy for Agenda 2030 for sustainable development.
Energy adviser to the Prime Minister Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, who is leading Bangladesh delegation at the forum, said, "Developed countries should demonstrate greater ‘energy responsibility’ towards a demand side control of power wastage and make frontier technologies for smart and renewable energy available to developing countries.” Bangladesh was highly praised at the forum for remarkably success in increasing electricity penetration from 45 per cent to 90 per cent since 2009 including five million home solar systems.
Earlier energy adviser called on the Thai Energy Minister Dr. Siri Jirapongphan at the Ministry of Energy to discuss bilateral cooperation in energy sector.
During the meeting both sides agreed to work on a framework cooperation agreement on energy sector. At the meeting executive secretary has agreed to conduct a feasibility study for frontier technology in the energy sector for renewable and sustainable energy for Asian and the Pacific countries.
Ambassador of Bangladesh to Thailand and Permanent Representative to the UNESCAP Saida Muna Tasneem and Additional Secretary of ERD Md. Anwar Hossain accompanied the adviser during the meeting.
