Says health minister

The government will bear the cost of Rajib Hossain's treatment, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim has said. Rajib lost his right hand in an accident on Tuesday. The hand got stuck between two buses when one of the vehicles was trying to overtake the other in the capital's Karwan Bazar area. The minister made the announcement while visiting the college student at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday (Thursday). He also assured Rajib a government job.

“Rajib is an orphan and has two younger brothers. The government will provide him with a job on humanitarian grounds,” said the minister. Responding to a journalist's question, Nasim said if the medical board feels that Rajib’s hand can be restored, the government will bear the  cost of his treatment.

Uddin, director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Rajib is still not out of danger.The minister said Rajib was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital in the early hours of Thursday after his condition deteriorated.

“He is receiving good treatment. We hope he will get well soon,” Nasim said.

Earlier, a medical board was formed for Rajib. The seven-member board is led by the head of the orthopaedic department of the DMCH, Professor Dr Shamsuzzaman Shahin.

Shamsuzzaman Shahin said Rajib’s condition is stable.

“We are trying to give him the best treatment. We have examined Rajib. His brain is functioning normally. But a CT scan was done to be sure about his condition. More tests will be carried out. Two more operations will be done on the right hand,” he said.

Rajib’s relatives are anxious about what he will do now after losing one of his limbs. His aunt Jahanara said Rajib is conscious, but has become speechless after losing the right hand. Every time he looks for the right hand and doesn’t find it, tears roll down his cheeks, she said.

The eldest among three brothers, Rajib lost his mother around 10 years ago and father eight years back. He paid for his education from the money he earned working at a computer shop in the Dholaipar area.

A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate granted two days’ remand to the two bus drivers. They were produced before the court yesterday.

Shahbagh police arrested the drivers — one of the BRTC and the other of Sajan Paribahan. The BRTC driver is Wahid, 35, and Md. Khorshed, 50, belongs to Sajan Paribahan. Khorshed was arrested on Wednesday afternoon and Wahid was arrested from the accident site on Tuesday itself.

On Wednesday, the High Court ordered the BRTC and Sajan Paribahan to bear the medical costs for Rajib.

The court also issued a rule asking why the companies should not be made to pay Rajib Tk. 1 core in damages.
