3 to die for killing girl after rape
A court in Chattogram on Wednesday sentenced three people to death for killing a girl after gang rape in Pahartoli area of the port city in 2011. The convicts are Sujan Kumar Das, 22, Sameer Dey, 24, Jadu Ghosh, 25.
Roksana Parvin, acting Judge of Chattogram Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, delivered the verdict. Among the trio only Sujan was present in the dock while the rest were on the run.
According to the case statement, the convicts called the victim-Panna Rani Das-- over cell phone on June 7 in 2011 near Hari temple in South Kattoli area and killed her after rape. Later, they cremated the body by pouring kerosene on her. On the next day police recovered the body from the local cremation ground.
2 held with 1.20 lakh yaba tablets
Detectives in a drive arrested two people and seized 1.20 lakh yaba tablets from Moizzartek area under Karnaphuli police station in Chittagong on Thursday morning.
Md Shahidullah, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch of Police, said being tipped off that a yaba-laden covered-van was coming from Teknaf a team of DB police conducted the drive around 9am.
Later, they recovered the Yaba tablets and arrested the two people in connection this connection. The details about the arrestees could not be known yet.
3 of a family injured in fire
Three members of a family sustained burn injures as a fire broke out from a mosquito coil at their house in Shastapur area of Fatulla in Narayanganj early Thursday.
The victims are identified as Shahadat, 30, his wife Reshma and three-year-old son Arafat.
Manjur Quader, officer-in-charge of Fatulla Police Station, said the fire originated from a mosquito coil and engulfed Shahadats house early in the morning. The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he added.
Four arrested over Ctg Juba League man murder
Police arrested four people from Khilkhet area in the capital early Wednesday in connection with a case filed for killing of a Juba League activist on March 26.
Mohammad Shahidullah, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) deputy commissioner of Detective Branch, said that a team of police arrested the accused after raiding house of a female Awami League leader in Goran area of Khilkhet. After the murder, several murder accused including Awami League leader Haji Iqbal went into hiding at the house.
However, police failed to arrest Haji Iqbal as he fled after sensing the presence of police but his son was among the detainees, he said. The accused will be brought back to Chattogram soon, he added.
According to the case statement, earlier on March 26, a local Jubo League activist Mohiuddin, 30, son of Abu Ibrahim, was hacked to death at Meher Afroze High School ground during voting for forming a school reunion committee following an internal feud.
Programmes on Pahela Baishakh
The Rangpur district administration at a meeting here chalked out elaborate daylong programmes to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bangla New Year- 1425, amid traditional festivities on April 14 next.
Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib presided over the meeting held at his conference room in the city on Wednesday. Heads of different government departments, organisations and educational institutions, Upazila Nirbahi Officers, leaders of different political parties, socio-cultural and professional organisations, civil society members and local elite participated in the meeting.
Acting President of District Awami League (AL) Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, Zila Parisahd Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Rabiul Islam, President of Rangpur unit of Bangladesh Medical Association Dr Delwar Hossain, Chairman of Sonic Prime Group Professor Dr Akkas Ali Sarker, former General Secretary of District Shilpokola Academy Tauhidur Rahman Tutul, noted cultural personalities Monwar Hossain and Professor Shah Alam, among others, addressed.
