Speakers at a day-long seminar yesterday said that it would not be possible for the country without active participation of women and keeping them aloof from development works. They have stressed for building a discrimination-free society to ensure women empowerment through strengthening grassroots level women leadership. The speakers said that women must also work sincerely to prove their worth for the job they would be given to do. Empowerment does not mean that they would exercise powers without any commitment for welfare of the people. They must be industrious and courageous to establish their rights in a male-dominated society. The discussants were addressing a regional seminar on “Political Empowerment of Grassroots Level Women” held at a local hotel conference room. A Khulna based non-government organisation Rupantar, arranged the seminar in collaboration with Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
Divisional Commissioner of Khulna Md Abdus Samad addressed the seminar as chief guest. Deputy Head of Mission and Director of Cooperation of Embassy of Switzerland to Bangladesh Ms Beate K Elsaesser was present as guest of honour. Batiaghata upazila parishad chairman Ashraful Alam Khan and Mongla UZ Parishad chairman Abu Taher Hawlader, president of Nari Bikash Kendro Advocate Aloka Nanda Das were present as special guests.
Chief Executive of Rupantar Swapon Kumar Guho presided over the function. Executive Director of Sundarban Academy, Khulna Prof Anwarul Quadir conducted the seminar. Executive Director of Rupantar Rafiqul Islam Khokon delivered the welcome address.
The speakers also advocated for establishing gender equality to flourish women leadership at all levels for changing condition of the women folk, who constitutes half of the population, to ensure social justice, peace and overall national uplift.
Chief guest Md Abdus Samad said “All big achievements of the country will prove futile if the condition of general women doesn’t improve.” He called upon the grassroots level women leaders to work together for bringing an end to all sorts of discriminations and tortures being faced by the womenfolk in families, society and everywhere for smooth flourishing of women leadership. A total of 70 participants including government and NGO officials, elected public representatives both male and female, civil society members, journalists and elite attended the seminar.
