The teachers who were assaulted by BCL activists on the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology(SUST) campus on Sunday observed a token hunger strike yesterday demanding immediate removal of Vice-Chancellor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuyan from his post. They observed the four-hour long hunger strike wearing black badges on the last day of their three days’ scheduled programme. On the other hand, several hundred students from different departments observed a sit-in for two hours where they gave an ultimatum of 48 hours to remove VC Aminul from his post.
Sources said the teachers, who are on the movement demanding the VC’s removal, under the banner of “Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhakgon” started the hunger strike from 9:00am in front of the Administrative Building on Thursday.
Treasurer Prof Elias uddin Biswas came to the spot at 1:00pm and requested the agitated teachers to break the fast. Later convener of the teacher’s panel Professor Syed Shamsul Alam told the journalists that they would observe work abstention on Sunday if their demand was not met by this time. He also said the VC has been lying through the media blaming the teachers that the demonstrating teachers assaulted him on Sunday morning. But the country people can clearly see from CCTV footage that the VC assaulted Professor Mohammad Younus.
During the time, the office heads of the university also observed two hours’ work abstention on Thursday from 9:00am to 11:00am protesting the attack on teachers on Sunday. The office heads are Registrar Mohammad Ishfaqul Hussain, librarian Abdul Hayee Sameni, accounts office chief Zoinal Abedin, planning and development office chief Mollah Akbar Hossain, Office of the Controller of Examinations chief Mujibur Rahman, Engineering Office chief Syed Habibur Rahman, Medical Centre chief Md Mahbub Ahmed and Office of the Physical Education chief Chowdhury Saud Bin Ambia.
However, several hundred students from different departments under the banner of “General Students” brought out a procession from Central Library Building demanding immediate removal of the VC and paraded the campus and ended in front of the VC office where the teachers were observing hunger strike. There the students observed a sit-in programme from 11:00am to 1:00pm and gave a 48-hour ultimatum to remove VC from his post. Otherwise, they would go for a tougher programme. Mentioning VC as a liar, the students said he (VC) had no right to hold the post. When contacted, Proctor Professor Qumruzzaman Chowdhury said, actions would be taken against the students who brought out the procession and observed the sit-in on the campus without permission of the proctor.
