Stock ends week flat amid bearish trend

Stock market ended flat yesterday amid bearish trend that resulted in moderate level of loss to the broader price index at week’s close, reports BSS.
The DSEX index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) lost 47 points or 0.47 per cent over the week to finish the last session at 4812.82. The closing of broader index, however, was in the positive area as it was marginally higher than Wednesday’s close.
The blue-chip DS30 also closed the last trading session of the week in green at 1840.89, but the closing was 17.71 points or nearly 1 per cent lower than previous week’s close.
Unlike DSEX and DS30, the Shariah DSES closed the week in red when it lost 9.90 points or 0.81 per cent to finish at 1186.70.
The average daily trade value was 9.49 per cent down to Tk 394 crore when the average trade volume fell by nearly 12.0 per cent to 9.89 crore shares, with the weighted average price earning ration falling by 1.10 per cent to 16.42.
The market breadth, however, remained static at 0.63 despite the falling trend in transaction. A total of 118 securities closed the week higher against 186 losing issues. Mutual funds were in the top losers’ list. The other major losing sectors were bank (-2.80 per cent), engineering (-2.26 per cent) and telecommunication (-1.80 per cent). During week the heavyweights including Squire Pharma, Renata and Marico registered 2.2 per cent, 2.7 per cent and 3.4 per cent return respectively while pharmaceuticals, engineering, fuel and power and miscellaneous stocks were the market movers.
Miscellaneous, jute, pharmaceuticals and food and allied advanced this week on scrip-focused buying. The top gaining companies included Modern Dyeing (62.3 per cent), AIBL1STIMF (29.8 per cent) and Sino Bangla (25.6 per cent).
The major losing companies were SEBL1STMF (-15.4 per cent), NLI1STMF (-14.6 per cent) and ICBEPMF1S1 (-12.7 per cent).
Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) closed the week mixed yesterday, with its CSCX advancing marginally to finish the day at 8890.24 while the two selective indices closing lower.
Out of the traded 246 securities, 126 closed higher, 93 lower and 27 remained unchanged at the last trading session of the week. The daily transaction rose on the day when 1.20 crore shares worth Tk 38.71 crore changed hands.
