‘Keep children safe from seasonal diseases’

BSS

Experts suggested cautiousness to guardians about keeping children out of seasonal infectious diseases as sudden change in weather, burning sun, high sweating and dehydration are causing health risks to them, reports BSS. As children are vulnerable to weather change, a little fluctuation in temperature can cause several problems in their immune system that may causes cough, fever, respiratory problem, dehydration and diarrhea, they said.

“Children are very sensitive to hot and humid weather as they easily get dehydrated and germs in their bodies and fall sick”, said Director General of Directorate General of Health Services Prof Abul Kalam Azad.

He said children relatively have less body weight compared to adults making them more vulnerable to dehydration, he added.  Director of Dhaka Shishu Hospital Professor Dr Manzoor Hussain said the hospital nowadays is receiving more patients who are mainly affected by high fever, cold, cough and diarrhea.  Regarding the children in rural areas, he said, “They are getting sick in this weather as they are taking bath for a long time in ponds or canals.

Sometimes their parents don't notice that the children are dipping in water for a long time.” When these children come out of the water and start playing under burning sun, sometimes in wet condition, they fall sick, he added.

Children under five should not be given bath when they are sweaty and come from under the sun, he added.

Emphasizing importance on consuming extra food during pregnancy he suggested the would-be mothers should take more rest during summer. Acting Executive Director of The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) Syed Monjurul Islam said the summer, March and April, is considered to be 'peak season' for diarrhoeal diseases and the hospital registers a very high number of patients suffering from diarrhea during the period.
