RAJSHAHI: The 48th Independence and National Day was celebrated in the city and its adjacent areas amidst much enthusiasm, fanfare and festive mood yesterday, reports BSS. Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), divisional and district administrations along with various political, social and cultural organisations and educational institutions including Rajshahi University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology and Rajshahi Medical College chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the day.
The day's programmes began with heralding of 31 gun salutes at Police Lines and placing wreaths at the altar of the city's Shaheed Minars after sunrises.
Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP and Akter Jahan, MP paid rich tributes to the martyrs by placing wreaths at Collectorate Shaheed Minar followed by Commissioner of Rajshahi division Noor-Ur-Rahman, Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader and other administrative officials.
DIG of Rajshahi Police Khurshid Hossain, Commissioner of RMP Mahbubor Rahman and SP of Rajshahi Md Shahidullah placed wreaths at Police Line Shaheed Minar.
RCC authority led by Mayor Mosaddeque Hossain placed wreaths at Bhuban Mohan Park Shaheed Minar and other political, social and cultural organisations also laid wreaths there.
The day's programmes also included hoisting of national flag atop all government, semi-government, private and public buildings, educational and other institutions, amusement rally, friendly cricket and football tournaments, reception to the Freedom Fighters (FFs) and screening of documentary films at different cinema halls and other open places.
A combined march-past by the members of police, Ansar-VDP, fire service, BNCC, scouts, girl guides, jail guards and students of different educational institutions and physical display attracted people at district stadium in the morning.
Improved diets are being served among the inmates of hospitals, jails, safe homes, orphanages.
Besides, the city's important visiting spots and amusement places like Rajshahi University Smrity Sangrahashala, Varendra Research Museum, Central Zoo and Shishu Park have remained open for the visitors throughout the day.
Another report adds from Rangpur: Like elsewhere in the country, the day was celebrated here with a fresh pledge for building a developed Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The district administration, Rangpur City Corporation, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad (BMS), Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies, other
political parties and dozens of organisations celebrated the day.

Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hassan Ahmed, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for Rangpur Range Khondker Golam Faruk, Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib, Police Super Mizanur Rahman placed wreaths at Swadhinota Smritistambha `Arjan' and monuments of martyred freedom fighters in the city.
Leaders of AL and its associate bodies, BMS, BNP, Jatiya Party, JASOD, Gano Forum, Ganatantry Party, Workers Party, BSD, CPB and other political leaders placed wreaths at the Swadhinota Smritistambha `Arjan', Central Shaheed Minar and monuments of martyred freedom fighters.
Leaders of District Corruption Prevention Committee, Rangpur Ainjibi Samity, Rangpur Chamber, Sommilito Sangskritik Jote, Rangpur Sahitya Sangskritik Parishad, Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee, Shilpokola Academy, Udichhi Shilpi Gosthi, NGOs and other organisations placed wreaths there.
