The ‘Badurtala Mass Grave’ of 1971 was at last specified formally in Rajshahi yesterday (Sunday), 47 years after Independence. The Badurtala Mass Grave is situated across a wide swathe of the city’s Talaimari area. The Pakistani occupation forces buried thousands of Bangladeshis in the Badurtala area after carrying out mass killings in various areas of Rajshahi during the Liberation War.
Some freedom fighters of Rajshahi region recently started working towards the formal recognition of the Badurtala Mass Grave.Freedom fighters along with locals arranged a meeting and formally specified the Badurtala Mass Grave yesterday morning. Freedom fighter Dr Abdul Mannan presided over the meeting, while freedom fighter and poet Ruhul Amin Pramanik was present as the chief guest. Former Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) mayor, freedom fighter Abdul Hadi, formally inaugurated the mass grave. Local freedom fighters, members of martyrs’ families and children of freedom fighters were also present.
Freedom fighter Abdul Hadi noted that the overall situation in Rajshahi city became volatile with the spontaneous protests of the masses from the initial days of March 1971, when the then Pakistani rulers postponed the scheduled March 3 session of the National Assembly. Thousands spontaneously came out on the streets under the banner of Sarbadaliyo Chhatra Sangram Parishad and Shramik Sangram Parishad.
