Steps against question paper leak

HSC questions to be set 25 minutes before exams

STAFF REPORTER

The education ministry has said that the question sets for the upcoming Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams will be decided just 25 minutes before the tests to prevent question paper leakage. “All sets of questions will be sent in security packets to exam centres. The set of questions will be fixed centrally by the Dhaka Education Board through a lottery just 25 minutes before the tests. Only then will the persons concerned will be informed about the selected set of questions,” Md Sohorab Hossain, secretary to the Secondary and Higher Education Division, said yesterday.

He told this to journalists after a meeting on monitoring the upcoming HSC and equivalent exams, which will begin on April 2 and end on May 13. Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Technical and Madrasha Division secretary Md Alamgir, and other senior officials from different divisions were present there.

“This time, the persons concerned at exam centres will be unaware of which set of questions would be selected for the exams. They can only know about it after receiving a message from the Dhaka board,” Hossain added.

He also said examinees have to appear at the exam halls 30 minutes before the start of each exam. Such measures were taken in the recently concluded Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams, he added.

“If any student fails to enter the exam centre on time for some special reason, the related information will be registered in a book. If the same examinee does it more than once, he/she will not be allowed to enter the exam hall next time. This information will have to be sent to the respective education board,” he noted.

Hossain said widespread question paper leak, which occurred in the SSC exams, will not be repeated during the HSC examinations. “Under the current system, it's not possible to give hundred per cent assurance that the questions will not be leaked. However, all sorts of precautions have been taken. If any proof is found of question leak against anybody, no one will be spared,” he asserted.

In reply to a query as to how many sets of

questions will be printed for the HSC exams, the education minister said: “We won’t reveal the number of question paper sets to be printed. It’s a strategic matter.”

The education ministry drew flak after the massive question paper leak in the recently concluded SSC examination. Even the resignation of the education minister was sought in Parliament for his failure to stop such leakage.

Later, the education ministry formed a committee to find out the reason behind the leak. The committee found some similarities between rampant leaks, but did not suggest cancellation of any exams. The ministry said they had tried their best to stop the question paper leak, but to no avail. Later, it said they would cancel multiple choice questions (MCQs) as a measure to curb the incident of question such leakage.

The ministry wanted to do away with MCQs from the upcoming HSC examination, but it was not possible due to shortage of time. However, there would not be any MCQs from the next time, it confirmed.
