An eminent Buddhist personality of Myanmar has expressed dissatisfaction over the role of state counselor Aung San Suu Kyi as regards her handling of the Rohingya crisis, describing the oppression in Rakhine state as the worst ethnic cleansing. Khin Zaw Win, the director of Tampadipa Institute in Yangon, working on policy advocacy on communal issues, land and nationalism, also said that the word ‘Rohingya’ has derived from ‘Rakhine’ and laid emphasis on Myanmar nationalism rather than Buddhist nationalism. Win was speaking at a seminar titled ‘Call by a loner in Myanmar’ on March 20 at the Dutch capital of The Hague organised by Humanity House, a museum and a think tank, according to a press release forwarded by the foreign ministry yesterday. He is one of the very few people belonging to Buddhist religion who is speaking for justice for the Rohingyas. Win was also a prisoner of conscience in Myanmar for “seditious writings” and human rights work from 1994 – 2005.
Speakers at the seminar called for bringing the perpetrators of the atrocities against the Rohingyas to justice and imposing sanctions against them.
Ambassador to The Netherlands Sheikh Mohammad Belal and a senior official of the Dutch foreign ministry also spoke on the occasion. Detailing the persecution and brutalities against the Rohingyas for decades, ambassador Belal called upon the international community including the United Nations to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
The senior Dutch diplomat said that The Netherlands is trying to bring the Rohingya issue into the discussions of the UN Security Council and the identification and sanctions on the perpetrators will bring good results.
