National Genocide Day observed in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA: The National Genocide Day was observed in the district yesterday in remembrance of the brutality carried out by Pakistani Army on the unarmed Bengalis at the black night of March 25 in 1971, reports BSS.

Marking the day, district administration chalked out elaborate programmes at the directives of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.

In the morning, whip of the Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini, deputy commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Pal and superintendent of police (SP) Abdul Mannan Miah placed wreaths at the martyred tombstone located in Old DC office area.

Then, district unit of Bangladesh Awami League, Gaibandha Pourashava, district and upazila unit commands of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad, Gaibandha Adarsha Degree College, district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League and other socio-cultural organisations of the town placed wreaths there.

Later, a discussion was also held at the auditorium of Zila Shilpakala Academy with DC Gautam Chandra Pal in the chair.

Whip Mahabub Ara Begum Gini addressed the function as the chief guest and SP Abdul Mannan Miah, general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, district unit, Abu Bakar Siddique and mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon were present as special guests.

The whip said on March 11, 2017 the Jatiya Sangsad unanimously adopted a resolution to observe March 25 as the National Genocide Day and accordingly, the day was observed in the country for the second time.

A large number of people including district level officials, NGO activists, political leaders, cultural personalities, teachers, students and journalists attended the programmes.
