Flower cultivation is becoming popular among farmers of Madhukhali and Sadar upazillas of Faridpur district. They are cultivating gladiolus and marigold on their farmlands on a commercial basis.
Gladiolus could be harvested within 90 days of planting and it bloomed all the year round, said Anwar Hossain, a flower-grower of Ghonoshampur village under Sadar upazilla in the district.
Hossain has been cultivating gladiolus on 16 decimals of land for four years. He has also been growing marigold on 60 decimals for three years.
“A good amount of investment is required for flower cultivation because it is much more profitable than other agricultural items,” he said.
This year, Hossain has cultivated roses on 10 decimals of land.
Moslem Uddin of Piarpur has been cultivating gladiolus for the past three years, having failed to earn profits from paddy cultivation. “I now cultivate gladiolus on seven acres. I sell them in the local markets and in Dhaka,” he told The Independent.
Md Abul Basar Miah, Sadar upazilla agriculture officer, said flower cultivation became very popular among farmers of Ghonoshampur, Mollikpur, Piarpur and Poranpur areas under Sadar upazilla and Paikgachi and Boro Gopaldi areas of Madhukhali upazilla.
Kartik Chandra Chakraborty, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said the DAE was helping farmers with advice and suggestions regarding growing flowers.
Farmers in the district are becoming interested in flower cultivation as this occupation is proving to be more profitable than growing other crops.
