After appearing in a cameo role in the movie ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ in 2013, Sean Penn comes back into limelight with the movie ‘The Gunman’. The movie is directed by Pierre Morel, who is best known for directing films like – ‘District 13’, ‘From Paris with Love’ and ‘Taken’. The movie stars Sean Penn, Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, Mark Rylance, Jasmine Trinca, Peter Franzén and Ray Winstone into the key roles. The movie is based on ‘The Prone Gunman’ (Original French title La Position du tireur couché,), by Jean-Patrick Manchette. Don Macpherson, Pete Travis and Sean Penn have co-written the screenplay.
The plot of the movie is not like any regular action thrillers that we witness everyday. The movie received mixed reviews from the audiences. For some the story is more solid from the practical sense and it’s highly interesting from the word go. For others it’s a misfire, the plot is too lengthy and lackluster. Although from the box office perspective the movie proved to be a flop, as the budget of the movie was $40 million and it only managed to earn about $15.9 million. The movie mostly received negative reviews from the critics. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 17 per cent approval rating, based on 140 reviews, with a rating average of 4.4/10. The site’s consensus reads, “With an uninspired plot and rote set pieces that are overshadowed by its star’s physique, The Gunman proves a muddled misfire in the rapidly aging Over-50 Action Hero genre.”
Sean Penn is one of the eminent and versatile actors in Hollywood. He has portrayed different types of characters throughout his successful career. Sean Penn started working in Hollywood from an early age and in 1981 he made his movie debut through ‘Taps’. At 55 Sean Penn looks to be in great shape. He was simply outstanding in his role and his fans surely hope he would do more action films in the future. As usual performances of Javier Bardem and Ray Winstone are something to watch out for. All the other actors were really good at portraying their individual roles. Regardless of these facts the movie botched the expectation of the movie buffs. When movie buffs hear Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Ray Winstone are in the same movie, the level of expectation automatically rises to a certain level. Now ‘The Gunman’ may not be able to match that level of expectation but it’s not the worst movie of the year either.
