While Mashrafe Bin Mortaza remains as useful as he is ever, some youngsters have caught the attention, showing the credential after the end of the first phase of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League.

Fast bowler Qazi Onik is to the fore amongst the young players as he demonstrated his skill to unsettle the batsmen with his searing pace, something which most of the Bangladeshi pacer lacked. Not only pace, he maintained a right line and length, making it tougher for the batsmen. 28 wickets in 11 matches with two five-for complemented the performance that he showed in the league. But sadly he won’t be in the scene in the super league since his club Mohammedan couldn’t make it to the top six teams.

Once a powerhouse of the country, the Motijheel outfit indeed continued its dismal show in the Premier League since 2009 when they last time clinched the coveted trophy.

However Qazi Onik for the time being is in the second spot of the bowling ladder, lead by evergreen Mashrafe Bin Mortaza who so far claimed 30 wickets in 11 matches with two five-for. Mashrafe and Onik were the only two bowlers with two five-for in the league so far, though Mashrafe had better average, strike rate and economy rate.

Mashrafe’s experience and expertise in Bangladeshi pitch however made him tougher one for the batsmen but the 19-year old Onik’s performance was impressive, given he could be the kind of the bowler that the selectors has long been searching. There was Taskin Ahmed with searing pace but after playing four years in the national team, Taskin is yet to learn the art of maintaining right line and length.

“He has the credential to be a good fast bowler. He has the aggression and knack to learn the things quite quickly,” Mashrafe said of Onik. “He has still long way to go but I hope he will continue to work hard with his bowling. I also hope he won’t feel complacent.”

Fast bowlers like Shaiful Islam, Mohammad Shaheed also showed occasional flashes brilliance but performance of Al-Amin Hossain and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam was disappointing.

However in batting front, Nazmul Hossain Shanto continued to be impressive as he played some match winning knock for Abahani. His 150 not out remained the highest individual knock in this phase. Towhid Ridoy and Shadman Islam, who were young, yet remained the batting mainstay of newcomer Shinepukur Sporting Club, also showed the credential that could make them the future star of Bangladesh. As he was tipped, Al-Amin Hossain seemed to be in right track, making 495 runs in 11 matches.

The batting chart was led by Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity’s Indian recruit Asok Maneria who scored 570 in 11 matches with one century and six half-centuries. His runs is the reason that the team made the super league for the first time. Legends of Rupganj’s Abdul Majid (536) and Naeem Islam (529) were only other two to have scored 500 plus runs. There was also Ashraful who scored 460 runs with three centuries in the league for Kalabagan Krira Chakra but still his place in the national, specially in ODI set-up, looks impossible.

Majid was amongst the runs for the last three or four seasons, but yet to be called up for the national team. Despite scoring runs in abundance, Naeem Islam’s chance to stake claim for the national team also looked deemed, specially when several young players cemented their place.
