Naikathi Zamindar Bari

Naikathi Zamindar Bari

On that day, I began my journey. My aim was to visit and capture photos of Saturia Zamindar Bari in Jhalakathi district. I reached my desired site, observed, speculated and snapped some photos of the house. I was done with my task and kept on wandering aimlessly in my hired vehicle on the Jhalakathi-Pirojpur highway. As always, my eyes were still searching the landscape for something more. And quite unexpectedly, I found a little-known zamindar (landlord) house beside the highway.

I didn’t wait a moment to reach the abandoned house and observe every detail of it. It was an impressive structure. But, I felt a little disheartened, too, as I could not get any information about the house. The main reason was that the zamindar house had remained unexplored for decades, until I stepped there. The joy of exploration is beyond any words. With a mixed feeling of exploring an abandoned house and a heavy heart for remaining ignorant about its history, I returned home.

Without delay, I started searching about the house in different textbooks, the internet and every other possible source. But, it was all in vain. There was no information about the house. I can just provide the location of the house, but not its historical background. The zamindar bari is located at Naikathi village under Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi district. According to the local people, it was built in the middle of the 18th Century by a Hindu zamindar. Now, it is a totally abandoned property, in a very dilapidated condition. The interior of most of the rooms were damaged years ago.

Rarely, any traveller gets to have a glimpse of this abandoned house. Unfortunately, there is no one to take any step to preserve the house. If conservation measures are not taken immediately, then the unknown heritage structure will disappear in the black hole of unkind time.

Time goes on, and I have moved towards new explorations. But still, the mystified aura of that abandoned zamindar house at Naikathi remains in my deepest conscience.
