Principal Coordinator on SDG Affairs at Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Abul Kalam Azad yesterday said development works of readymade garment park in Mirersarai Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) would be started in December, reports BSS.

The RMG Park on 500 acres of land in MEPZ would pave the way for a planned industry for country’s apparel sector as well as vast employment opportunities, he added.

Azad made the remarks at the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on allocation of 500 acres of land in MEPZ in a city hotel.

BEZA Executive Member Md. Harunur Rashid and BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman put pen on the paper. BGMEA President handed over a cheague of Taka 25 crore to BEZA Executive Chairman Paban Chowdhury during the ceremony.  Mentioning that the present government is business-friendly, the principal coordinator said the government has taken different measures to make the public-private partnership successful.

With this partnership, the relationship between BEZA and BGMEA will be strengthened further, and contribute a lot to propelling the country ahead under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he added.  Chaired by BEZA Executive Chairman Paban Chowdhury, Commerce Secretary Shubhashish Bose, PMO Secretary (In-charge) Sajjadul Hasan, FBCCI President Shafiul Islam Mahiuddin, BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman, former Presidents Abdus Salam Morshedi and Atiqul Islam, and BEZA Executive Members Mohammed Ayub and Dr. M.  Emdadul Haque also spoke on the occasion.

Paban Chowdhury said the RMG Park would help reduce the transportation cost and boost export in competitive world market.

He revealed BGMEA has taken a scheme of $ 2 billion investment in MEPZ, owned by BEZA, for RMG and RMG accessories which would generate employment for 5 lakh people.
