Man ‘kills’ wife for dowry
Magura: A housewife has been tortured to death allegedly by her husband for dowry at Barkhari village in Sadar upazila, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Reba Khatun, 25, wife of Golam Mollah of the village.
Quoting victim’s family members, officer-in-charge of Magura Police Station Ilias Hossain said Golam Mollah married Reba five years ago.
Since their marriage, Golam had been demanding dowry from her family and used to torture her very often, he said.
On Tuesday, he locked into an altercation with Reba over the issue and beat her indiscriminately, leaving her dead on the spot. Later, he hanged the body with the ceiling of the house to make it appear that she committed suicide.
97 BNP men sent to jail
Jessore: A court in Jessore on Tuesday sent 97 leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations to jail in different cases filed against them, reports UNB.
Senior District and Session Judge of Jessore Aminul Islam passed the order after they surrounded to the court, said Rafiqul Islam Pitu, public prosecutor (PP) of the court.
There are nine cases in nine police stations against them, said the PP. “They were granted interim bail for six weeks by the High Court that was ended on Tuesday,” he added.
The BNP men were sent to Jessore Central Jail in fabricated cases as part of the government’s repression on BNP men, said Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, general secretary of Jessore district unit of BNP.
“We demand immediate release of the BNP men,” he added.
43 fishermen held with huge ‘jatka’, current nets
Bhola: Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard in separate drives detained 43 fishermen along with 25 mounds of Jatka and 60,000 meters of current nets from Meghna river on Tuesday night, reports UNB.
Bhola Coast Guard sources said, Coast Guard members with the help of fisheries department conducted a drive in Padma River at Razapur village in the district headquarters and seized a trawler along with 25 mounds of Jatka.
In another drive, Coast Guard members in association with fisheries department members of Doulatkhan detained 28 fishermen along with 3,0000 meters of current nets.Laxmipur Coast Guard sources said, Coast Guard members and fisheries department of the district headquarter conducted several drives in different points of the Meghna river and arrested 15 fishermen along with 30,000 meters of current nets and seized seven engine-run boats.
