BCB to finalise BPL franchisees Friday

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon yesterday said that they will finalise the number of franchisees for the new edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) on September 4. “You all know that five teams amongst the new and old aspirants enterprises have already provided the pay-order and bank guarantee worth Tk 5.5 crore before the deadline. Besides them, other five enterprises showed their interests to be part with the BPL third edition,” said Nazmul Hassan.
“Of them, two enterprises sent letters to us seeking the extension of times. And the rest of the interested companies told us to give them chance to become franchisee in the BPL as they missed to meet the deadline for being stayed in abroad. But we didn’t take any decision regarding them,” Papon told media after an informal meeting at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.
“On September 4, we could take our decision about them. And then we could inform you what will be the actual number of teams for the new edition,” he added. The president said that they will take two things under their consideration before finalising the number of franchisees for the BPL-3.
“We have to decide first whether we will accept their proposal or not. Secondly, if we will accept their proposal then we need to scrutinize them. Actually it is tough to make comment over them at this moment,” he thinks.
“We can organise the upcoming version of BPL with five franchisee teams. Actually in our original action plan we had wishes to arrange the much-talked league with six teams,” he reveals. The BCB boss said that they held no formal talk with Pakistan regarding bilateral series out of the current FTP but some countries are talking to play with us. “Officially there is no such talk with them till now. But talks are being held with other countries alongside Pakistan. We could finalise such types of talks when we will sit in the next ICC meeting. If we could bring any bilateral tour out of FTP (Future Tour Programme) we have to settle it through discussion in ICC meeting,” he opined.
“I don’t see any chance of it. BPL will be started in the next month. Australia will also come in the same month. We have Asia Cup ahead. In January, Zimbabwe are scheduled to come to play a series. Thereafter, we will go to India to play ICC World Twenty20. Amid these games, it is not possible for us to take any initiative to arrange any series or make tour for any series.”
For financial problems BCB cancelled the rights of Game On Management, who were the event management of the BPL. But this time the board will give advertisement for the event management company within one or two days. “Firstly, it’ll be done by the process of tender. For the expression of interest (EOI), we’ll give it through advertisement,” Nazmul said.
“We’d rules and indication that anybody of BCB will not involve in this matter. If anyone has any involvement or desire to involve with it then he’ll not participate in any activities in BCB.” About financial irregularities, BCB president said, “There is no chance of financial irregularities. We got money in advance. We’ve pay order (Tk one crore) and bank guarantee (Tk 4.4 crore) in hands. We’ll take it converting cash if they can’t pay in due time.”
“Marketing company, Axiom Technologies, will sell their right partly or entirely. But they’ll not sell their right to those if BCB has any reservation against them. Before selling their right they have to take its approval from the board. But according to the existing law, anybody will not be allowed changing their ownership within four years,” Hassan told in response to a query.
About the next Asia Cup, Papon said that Asia Cup will be held in India but if it’ll not take place there due to any reason Bangladesh will then be the next and better option for the next edition. “Any decision has yet to be finalised. Two consecutive editions have been held in Bangladesh. I don’t know about the next edition. First preference will be India and then Bangladesh. No final decision about venue has settled in the last meeting. It’ll be discussed when it will be brought up in the next ACC meeting,” he said, adding, “Bangladesh will host the meet if we get the proposal.”
