Drishtipat Natyadal, one of the prominent theatre troupes in the country, will stage the 40th show of its acclaimed play ‘Raja Himadri’ tomorrow evening at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.
Dr Khandaker Tazmi Noor has adapted and directed the play from the Sophocles’ classic ‘Oedipus’. The director converted the characters, place and the plot of the Greek tragedy to give it a sub-continental touch suitable for the contemporary local audience. The storyline, however, remains the same.
Sophocles is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have survived. His first plays were written later than those of Aeschylus, and earlier than or contemporary with those of Euripides. The most famous tragedies of Sophocles feature Oedipus. Sophocles influenced the development of the drama, most importantly by adding a third actor, thereby reducing the importance of the chorus in the presentation of the plot. He also developed his characters to a greater extent than earlier playwrights such as Aeschylus.
The cast of the play includes Khandaker Tazmi Noor, Marjana Borsha, Abdul Halim Aziz, Jahangir Kabir Bokul and Sreya Khandaker, among others.
Tickets will be available in front of the hall before the show.
