Sk Kamal Club Cup likely to be delayed

Sports Reporter

The third edition of the Sheikh Kamal Club Cup football tournament became uncertain to take place this year when the organisers, the Chittagong Abahani Limited are thinking if they would fail this year then the tournament will be held early of 2019.

The high ups of the Chittagong Abahani are thinking freshly to organise this international club cup tournament, as they have a plan to organise the third edition with involving three teams from India – like the Indian giants East Bengal, Mohan Bagan and Kolkata Mohammedan Sporting Club.

Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, the secretary general of Chittagong Abahani while talking to this correspondent over phone yesterday, said, “You know, Sheikh Kamal Club Cup tournament has become very popular within a short time in our region and surpassed our continent, as team from the top soccer nation (a team from South Korea) in Asia participated.”

“We want to keep up the continuity of this tournament but due to very tight schedule of this year – like SAFF Championship and Bangabandhu Gold Cup, if we fail to organise this year, early of 2019 the tournament will take place.”

Shamsul Haque, also a lawmaker, said, “Our target would be this year and will try heart and soul but if could not manage time then will have to shift for next year.”

Shamsul Haque also explained another reason to make delay to organising the tourney when he said, “In fact we eagerly want to make the tournament more competitive and attractive to the fans and in this respect we want to involve the Indian popular teams like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Kolkata Mohammedan, these teams are the branded football teams in our region.”

However, Shamsul Haque informed that this time eight teams will take part in the tournament and they will invite three Indian teams, as many from home and rest of two may be from Thailand, Myanmar or Malaysia.”

“This time we are planning to organise the tournament with a little change, we enthusiastically want two or three Indian clubs in the tournament and the schedule will also be announced after discussion with them,” Shamsul Haque said.

But Tarafdar Ruhul Amin, chairman of the Ctg Abahani Limited football committee and also the main sponsors of the tournament said, “We are still on the preliminary stage and yet to discuss about to finalise anything. We will sit on to settle everything to organise the third edition.”
