Tens of thousands of people have been marooned due to the rise in the water level of different rivers caused by incessant rain and onrush of water from the hills. Many new areas have been inundated, resulting in untold sufferings of people. As low-lying areas have gone under water, people, along with their cattle, have taken shelter on high lands, including embankments. But to make matters worse, there is absence of proper shelter and relief.  They alleged that supply of relief materials by the local administration is not enough to meet their growing needs.  Flood waters are not receding from their houses, rather the situation is worsening due to frequent rain.
Besides, there is scarcity of fodder for animals as most of the lands have gone under water. Farmers and fish cultivators have also suffered huge losses as their farmlands are under water for several days. Flood Information Centre sources said the overall flood situation in the north and central regions of the country may deteriorate, while in the north-east it may start improving in the next 48 hours.
The rivers around Dhaka city are rising, and this trend is likely to continue for the next 72 hours. But they will remain below the danger level. Some 23 rivers are flowing above danger level. The Surma is flowing 149cm above the danger level, Atrai by 134cm, Kangsha by 105cm, Dharala by 45cm and the Teesta by 25cm.
