As water resource sector is facing huge pressure due to population growth, economic development and climate change, the 100-year Bangladesh Delta Plan (BDP)-2100 will provide long term solution ensuring better and sustainable water management, water experts told a workshop here yesterday, reports BSS.
Bangladesh Delta Plan-2100 is being prepared by integrating delta-related sectors and all geographic regions of the country for developing a holistic plan, they told the workshop titled “Scenario Development for Bangladesh Delta Plan-2100 in the National Economic Council (NEC) conference room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.
Like other deltas, Bangladesh is dealing with unprecedented challenges related to rapid population growth, urbanization and industrial development in combination with more extreme climate events and decreasing flows as a result of development in riparian countries, the experts added.
In his presentation, Team leader of the BDP-2100 project of Prof Dr. Jaap de Heer said a total of six delta hotspots have been identified for the BDP-2100 to ensure structured implementation of the delta plan in the form of different strategies.
Six hotspots are coastal zone, barind regions, haor regions, Chittagonh Hill Tracts, rivers and estuary and urban areas, he added.
For the Bangladesh Delta Plan sceneries have been developed to identify the impacts and bottlenecks of uncertain future developments, Prof Jaap said. The scenarios can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of measures and strategies for each scenario, which helps decision makers to prioritize their choices today, he added.
Deputy Team Leader of BDP-2100 project Giasuddin Chowdhury, Prof Umme Kulsum Navera of Department of Water Resources Engineering of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), senior officials, water experts from several local and international organizations, among others, attended the workshop.
