Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman yesterday said the financial institutions must spend one-third of their CSR funds for educational purposes, reports UNB.
“Corporate social responsibility (CSR) fund must be spent for education purposes, including providing scholarship to students from disadvantaged families living in remote areas like chars and haors,” he said.
The BB governor was addressing the ‘First International Conference on Digital Education’ at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Dhaka University campus.
BacBon Foundation, BacBon Ltd and Center on Budget and Policy of DU jointly organised the programme. Dr M Abu Eusuf, director of the centre, presided over the function.
DU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Japanese Ambassador Masato Watanabe, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and Daffodil International University VC Dr Yousuf Mahbubul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
Professor Yonekura Seiichiro of Hitotsubashi University of Japan presented a keynote paper while Youshida, CEO of NetLearning Inc, also spoke at the function.
Dr Atiur said the educational CSR support was about Tk 234 crore in 2014 and first half of 2015.
Besides, he said, the central bank has provided regulatory space for developing e-commerce, outsourcing, and software development, which are enabling thousands of youths to get jobs and motivating some of them to emerge as successful entrepreneurs.
