A drive against illegal internet service provider (ISP) who are operating without permission will start from the second week of this month, said Mohammad Sarwar Alam, secretary of Bangladesh Telecommunication Commission (BTRC).
According to Telecom law 2001, any ISP must get a licence to provide internet connection to the subscribers, but the unfortunate thing is that, even BTRC is unaware of the numbers of illegal ISP in the country.
Thus BTRC has posted the name of the legal ISPs on their website clarifying the existence of ISP besides the name given on the website to be illegal.
According to the website there are 126 nationwide legal ISP. Among them, 95 in Central Zone, 28 in South – East Zone, 8 in South – West Zone, 10 in North- East Zone and 17 in North – West Zone.
Besides that, 145 in category A (Dhaka metropolitan area) 145; 29 in category B (Chittagong, Rajshahi, Barishal And Sylhet metropolitan area) 29 and 24 in category C (Other than metropolitan area) legal ISP are there.
If any illegal operator provides service, according telecom law, government has the full right to fine the company Tk 300 crores or ten years of imprisonment to the people connected with the illegal act.
BTRC has sought help from the citizens of the country to identify these illegal ISPs.
