Dredging of Padma River begins at Lohaganj point

Dredging of Padma River begins
at Lohaganj point

Dredging of Padma River at Lohaganj point has began using Big dredger from the Padma Bridge project China Sine Hydro from yesterday morning.
Sand and silt is being dredged out from the bed of the river to make the Shimulia-Kawrakandi river route navigable. The required amount of silt will be removed where ever it is necessary to restore the navigability on the route.  Sources said China Major Bridge Construction Company Limited, assigned for Padma Bridge Project has taken up the work.
The Sino High Dredger is able to remove 25,000 Mt sand everyday. About 5 to 6 lakh cubic metre of silt will be removed at Lohagnaj turning point. In this way, the dredging work is expected to be completed within two weeks.
“A 12-member high-level committee visited key points of the river route and decided to conduct the survey,” BIWTC’s Executive Engineer Md Sultan Uddin Khan said on Tuesday.
Shallowness-induced poor navigability has been hampering traffic on the water route, popularly known as the gateway to Bangladesh’s south.
Ferry services on the route have effectively remained suspended for the last five days due to navigability problem, stranding hundreds of vehicles, mostly transporting goods.
Earlier, four dredgers of BIWTC were in operation to remove the sand, but due to storing currents of water in the river the work could not be done.
The sufferings of passengers traveling on the route have no bounds. Besides, Eid-ul-Azha is approaching, and the pressure of home bound passengers will increase on the river route. As a result, the normal plying of the ferries is necessary on the route as early as possible.
The government has lost revenue to the tune of Tk four lakh till today. If the ferry service remains suspended for two more weeks, the government will lose more Tk four crore revenue.
