Police arrested two people, including a Juba League leader, from Latifpur area in Sadar upazila early yesterday in connection with the killing of Chandraganj union unit Awami League leader vice-president Omar Faruk, reports UNB.
The arrestees were identified as Ismael Hossain, former joint convener of Chandraganj union unit Jubo League and Nurul Islam.
Superintendent of police Shah Mijan Safiur Rahman said acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the duo in the dead of night.
Police detained them for interrogation in connection with the AL leader murder, the SP added.
Omar Faruk, vice-president of Chandraganj union unit of AL of West Latifpur village in Sadar upazila, was shot to death by unidentified criminals in Chandraganj upazila on Tuesday morning.
Quoting witnesses, police said a group of 4 to 5 criminals in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw swooped on Omar while he was taking tea at Mostafa Shop around 9:30am.
The attackers opened fire on the AL leader, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he died on way to Noakhali General Hospital.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue.
Mohammad Arjun, officer-in-charge of Chandraganj Police Station, said the reason behind the killing could not be known immediately.
