The curtain of the Bangladesh Youth Games will fall on weeklong first ever meet for the youth today at Bangabandhu National Stadium. Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) organized games with the participation of the young athletes from across the country. The Games were held in three phases- district, divisional and national level.
After the preliminary stage from the district and upzilla level from December, the final round was started with a colourful opening ceremony with the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurating the extravaganza sports carnival as the chief guest at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on March 10.
Finance Minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhit will declare the Games close as chief guest. The BOA decided to cancel fireworks from the closing ceremony to show respect to the departed soul of those people who were killed in a tragic plane crash in Kathmandu on Monday. A minute silence will be observed before the start of the closing ceremony in memory of place crash victims although there will be a cultural function, march-past of the participants and DJ Show. Meanwhile, the best attraction of the Games, 100 meters and 200 meters sprints of both boys and girls will be held at 7:15 pm, which will be last event of 21 disciplines during the week long sports competition.
Finally the athletes will leave the venue when the Game’s theme-song will be rendred at 8:30pm and the torch of the Games will also be put off.
A total of 2660 athletes participated in the final round when they competed for 342 gold, as many silver medals and 430 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, women’s weightlifting events were held yesterday at the NSC Gymnasium. Hamisa Parveen of Rangpur lifted the gold medal in 44kg weight category lifting a total weight of 73kg
Marzia Akhtar Ekira bagged the silver and Rahima Khatun earned the bronze.
Khulna’s Noorjahan Akhtar Moina snatched the gold in 48kg category also lifting 73 kg weight. Monica Roy got the silver and Shakila bagged the bronze. Gini Rani Roy of Rangpur grabbed the 51kg gold lifting a weight of 79kg. Tarin earned the silver and Samia bagged the bronze.
Badhan of Khulna got the 63kg weight category gold with a poor mark of 72kg. Suchitra got silver and Rahima Urmi annexed the bronze. Khulna got another gold medal in 58kg weight category when Khadiza Khatun lifted 87kg., while Mahiya Zannat grabbed the silver.
