Prithula’s mother waits for last glimpse of daughter

Rafeza Begum is waiting to have a last glimpse of her daughter. She is the mother of Prithula Rashid, co-pilot of the US-Bangla flight who died in Monday's plane crash in Nepal. Family sources said the body of Prithula will be brought back to Bangladesh on Sunday and she might be buried in the graveyard at Agargaon in the capital. Holding her daughter’s clothes tightly against her chest, Rafeza Begum, urged the government to bring back the body of her daughter as soon as possible. She also sought prayers from countrymen for the salvation of her departed soul. “She was the best daughter a mother can have. She left home for work at 6am and I at 7pm. I've returned, but Prithula has not yet come back. When my daughter left home, she fed me custard apple,” said Rafeza, who is an assistant director of the non-government organisation, ASA.

“After completing A-level, Prithula got some time and spent it for outsourcing work and earned a lot of money. She used the money for my cancer treatment,” Rafeza said. The grief-stricken mother has not been having food and is on saline.

“I salute my baby as she saved the lives of other people on the plane,” she sobbed.

Showing articles and books of Prithula, Rafeza, sitting on the bed in Prithula’s room, said: “It was her favourite profession. She was never disobedient to her parents. I am proud of my child.”

Prithula was the only child of Rafeza and Kajol Hossain. The father had been working in Russia for a long time. The family has been staying at the DOHS of Mirpur in the capital for the last two years.

Family sources said they have their own house at Shyamoli in the capital, but are staying at the DOHS because, as per US-Bangla Airlines rules: their employees have to stay within a designated distance from office.

Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader visited the bereaved family yesterday (Thursday), along with other Awami League leaders and the lawmaker of the area.

The minister expressed his deep condolences to the family members and consoled Prithula’s parents and others.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had sent him to convey condolences and told them to have patience.

Prithula’s mother expressed her gratitude to the Prime Minister and requested the minister “to bring back her child as soon as possible”.

“The government is making all arrangement for it,” Quader said.

Prithula’s father also requested the government for the quick return of her daughter's body.

Taufiqur Rahman, an uncle of Prithula, told The Independent: “We have come to know that the body of Prithula will be brought back on Sunday. Prithula might be buried in the graveyard at Agargaon in the capital.”
