CHITTAGONG: Police arrested at least 33 BNP leaders and activists including BNP vice-president and former Ward council-lor Niaz Mohammad Khan on Wednesday night, reports UNB.
The administration started arresting following the gathering in the port city on Wednesday demanding the release of BNP leader Khaleda Zia. Later, Kotwali Police conducted a drive to arrest City BNP General Secretary Abul Hashem from his Enayetbazar residence at night.
Chittagong Metropolitan BNP's Joint Secretary Saiful Alam said the police drives seeking to arrest the leaders and activists in their homes or elsewhere started around 9pm on Wednesday.
Police arrested at least 33 BNP leaders and activist including vice president Niaz Mohammad Khan and Thana BNP general secretary Nurul Islam Prakash Badshah Miah from a house in the city's Dhanaliapara area during the preparatory meeting of the Double Mooring Thana BNP around 9pm.
However, Saiful Alam claimed that there is no case or allegation against these leaders.
CPM Double Mooring Police Station Officer-in-Charge AKM Mohiuddin Selim confirmed the arrest and said that Double Mooring Thana BNP leaders were holding a secret meeting at Badshah's residence to create anarchy and sabotage in the city center around Thursday's gathering. After receiving the news, we raided and arrested several leaders and activists from the spot. They were taken into police station for interrogation.
