Dhaka WASA signs contract for two projects
Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) signed a contract with Institute of Water Modelling (IWM) for two projects at a hotel in the capital yesterday says press release.
The projects are: Artificial Recharge to Groundwater by Rainwater Harvesting from Building Roof-Tops and Establishment of Groundwater Monitoring System in Dhaka city for Aquifer and DWASA Production Wells.
Engr Taqsem A Khan, Managing Director of DWASA and Professor Dr M Monowar Hossain, executive director, IWM signed the contract on behalf of their respective organisations.
Prior to the signing, Engr Taqsem A Khan presided over a brief discussion where Engr Professor Dr Feroze Ahmed, vice-chancellor, Stamford University, Bangladesh attended the occasion as the guest of honour. Among others, Md. Serajuddin, Deputy Managing Director (RPD), DWASA and other officials were present on the occasion.
Prof Feroze Ahmed said due to environmental aspect Dhaka WASA has taken projects to collect water from far-away rivers. In spite of that, a monitoring over the condition of underground water sources is needed to know whether it is on satisfactory level. To make Dhaka a livable city keeping appropriate level of underground water sources is a must.
Engr Taqsem A Khan said Dhaka WASA has signed the contract for the aforesaid two projects with IWM considering the environmental aspect. Besides, it has taken three mega surface water supply projects in order to reduce dependency on groundwater sources. With scientific and professional research and study, Dhaka WASA has taken these long-term projects. After implementation of these projects, at the cost of about Tk 12,000 crore, a total of 140 crore litres water will be possible to supply daily in the city. An environment-friendly and public-oriented, sustainable water supply system will be ensured for Dhaka dwellers by 2021 through implementation of these projects.
