Controversy over JU deans’ appointment

There has been an allegation over the violation of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Act 1973 in the issue of appointments of two new deans of Social Sciences Faculty and Law and Justice Faculty in JU.

A faction of Awami League-backed teachers under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetanay Pragatishil Shikkhak Shamaj’ brought the allegation at a press conference held at the Teachers’ Lounge of social science faculty yesterday and protested the appointments of two new deans in two faculties.

They said JU Vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam appointed the two new acting deans without election and did not maintain the seniority at the faculty.

Meanwhile, the authorities of Jahangirnagar University on Wednesday night appointed two new acting deans of social sciences faculty and law and justice faculty.

Prof Rasheda Akhter of Anthropology department and Prof Bashir Ahmed of Government and Politics department were appointed as the acting deans of social science faculty and law and justice faculty respectively.

JU Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique confirmed it through two separate office orders yesterday.

Dean of the social science faculty Prof Md Amir Hussain and Dean of Law and Justice Faculty Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq have released from their respective faculties as they have been appointed as the Pro VC and Treasure of the university, the office order said.

Though these two professors of the university are holding top two posts of the university, they performed their duties at faculties for conducing admission process of academic session 2017-18. As the admission processes ended, they have released from their respective faculty posts, the order added.

The teachers group gave 24-hour ultimatum to JU Vice-chancellor to release the appointment of two new deans.

President of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetanay Pragatishil Shikkhak Shamaj’ Prof Md Abul Hossain said JU VC Prof Farzana Islam followed an undemocratic way to appoint the new deans and violated 1973 acts. Besides, she adopted illegal ways to release Prof Md Amir Hussain and Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq from their respective faculty posts.

He denounced the professors who have been appointed as the new acting deans of two faculties of the university and said JU VC appointed a junior Prof Bashir Ahmed though there were many senior professors in social science faculty.

“If our demand is not met within the next working day, we will go tougher movement in this regard”, he added.  Over 50 teachers of the group were present at the press meet.

When contacted JU VC Prof Farzana Islam said two acting deans have been appointed in accordance with the University Act 1973 in two faculties. They will obey their duty till the next dean election that will be held on

June.
